Students must attend their placement every week on either Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon. Students must arrive by 8.45am and return to University High School by the start of Session 3 if in the morning. If in the afternoon, students must leave in time to arrive at 1.45 and stay until 3.15. There will be no Community Service during camp week, or in the final week of term.

Each student should create a "Community Service" page on their blog, and post updates each week about their experience at their placement.

The University High School Galileo Program – Community Service

Advice for placement staff:

  • Ø The major purpose of the Community Service program is to allow students to develop skills and contribute in a positive way to your school or organisation.
  • Ø While UHS students are expected to take initiative, it is not helpful to continue a ‘sink or swim’ approach if they are clearly sinking. Staff should provide clear guidance and make clear any expectations of students where possible.
  • Ø Tamar Spatz will contact you if we know in advance that one of our students will be absent. If a student is absent unexpectedly, please email Tamar on: spatz.tamar.t@edumail.vic.gov.au
  • Ø Should there be any issues you or any other staff member wishes to discuss, please contact Tamar Spatz, Chris McCaw, or Carly Reggars on 9347-2022.

Expectations for UHS students:

  • Ø Arrive on time.
  • Ø Text or call Tamar, Chris or Carly before school (or earlier) if you know you will not be able to go to Community Service for any reason.
  • Ø No gum, ipods or computers, except as directed.
  • Ø Students are expected to show initiative, and be respectful of the teacher / staff member’s primary duty is to their class, children, shop etc.
  • Ø Visiting UHS students should not discipline primary students or infants in any way, other than to let them know that they will be reporting the behaviour to the classroom teacher or supervisor.
  • Ø If UHS students have concerns/complaints regarding their placement, they should first consult their immediate superior (eg. the classroom teacher if at a school) and secondly their Galileo home group teacher. If necessary, the Galileo home teacher may contact your placements directed contact person.
  • Ø Should UHS students wish to do any projects with their placement beyond the Community Service component (eg. an action project), they should first discuss the idea with their Galileo home teacher. With approval from UHS, the student may then discuss their idea with their placement supervisor.
